How Senior Center Facilities Can Provide Social Contact
Senior Center facilities can provide a welcome place for older members of the community to get out of their homes and meet other like minded people. They can be a source of new contacts which can prove invaluable in arranging new social activities and excursions, and they can also help you find contacts to help with the problems of day to day living. In situations where there are housing difficulties, the center can often help you to find the right counselors and advisors who can find you the best place to live.
The major purpose of senior centers is a social one, and even for those who only use them as a place to drop in from time to time they can be an important source of social contact and support. The centers will usually run regular events in a community building, often a local community center or a part of a church. If numbers and resources are somewhat limited, this may only involve the provision of simple refreshments, but there are many cases where full meals are provided for anyone who books and pays in advance. Sometimes, this can be the only source of a proper meal in the week for a senior who lives alone.
Well organized senior facilities can offer catering of the same standard you would find in a good quality restaurant, but at a fraction of the price. Where this happens, the center will often attract seniors from further afield, and seniors who actually have no need of the facilities but who welcome the chance to meet those who do. This can lead to effective word of mouth advertising, and an increase in the numbers of people using the facilities. In some cases, the center is prepared to provide meals to paying customers who come in off the street, irrespective of their age.
A senior center which has plenty of volunteers can also offer activities outside of the main building used for the meetings. These activities can be recreational, and involve no personal participation, such as watching movies or attending music recitals, or they can be more active. Many seniors are still active enough to take part in competitive sport, even though that may not be as vigorous as in their youth. Trips can also be made to special events in the local area, and if enough people make a contribution a coach can be hired to ensure comfortable travel.
The more serious aspect of these centers is the help that they can give to members who are facing personal difficulties. There are many seniors suffering with health conditions, and some of these conditions make living at home difficult. The center staff or volunteers will often know someone who can arrange for help to call in from time to time just to help with a few tasks which the senior now finds difficult. If the problems are more serious, the senior may need completely rehousing. Referrals to the right advisors and counselors can also come through this type of center.
It is impossible to predict exactly what the facilities will be like in your area, as there is no national or even state-wide organization which determines what should be found at a senior center. The local organizations are run by charity groups or volunteers, so it is a case of whatever they have experience in, or the expertise to provide. Suggestions from attendees will always be taken seriously, and will usually be implemented if there is no obvious reason why they should not be. Active centers in urban areas can effectively provide a full social life for the members, and they can contribute effectively to the running of the senior center.
